Lesson 07 - Crafting Chapter Pages
Hello! and thanks for joining me today as we continue your training and take a look at managing your chapter page in Bevy!
We all know first impressions are everything. Starting with your chapter page. Your chapter page should tell potential members everything they need to know about your group, and make them want to join!!!
Now, there is such a thing as a boring chapter page, and a bad first impression.
Maybe not as bad as this, but you’d much rather have your first impression be a complete, and exciting look at your community, like this.
Let’s walk through step by step and build that fantastic first impression.
Start by logging into your Bevy page. Once you’re logged in, you’ll see additional options on the navigation bar. Click edit chapter to access your organizer tools.
The first thing we should do is tell potential members about the group by adding some about text. Start by typing your desired message, and highlight text to format it. Highlight text to see your formatting options. All of the expected formatting options are there, from alignments, lists, hyperlinks, and more.
Next, let’s upload the chapter logo. The chapter logo is used when someone shares your chapter on social media.
Now let’s start to work on making the chapter page pop by uploading a banner image. Note that you can drag the image up and down to choose the best layout.
Now, we’ll add a video to your chapter page. If a picture is worth a thousand words, a video is worth at least 1.8 million. No kidding. Dr. James McQuivey did the math. We highly recommend including a video on your chapter page. This can be as high production as a commercial for the larger community you’re a part of, or as simple as a quick welcome video from your organizer team. One easy way to start is to turn your phone camera around and go with a simple “welcome! I’m one of this group’s organizers, here’s what we’re about, and we hope you join us! If you have any questions, please reach out”.
While they’re not absolutely necessary, it’s likely you’ve opened up some other channels to communicate with your members in between events. It’s easy to include those social channels like: Twitter, facebook, linkedin, flickr and instagram. Together with the social media handles, you can also include a link to your website if you have one.
Let’s go ahead and save the chapter and take a look. The chapter page is starting to take shape. We added a banner, social media handles, about text, and a video. While it’s not immediately visible here, we also added the chapter logo which will be used when someone shares your chapter on social media.
While a video might be worth more words than a photo, offering potential members a glimpse into what an event is like is another great way to convince them they should join. Let’s also add some photos to our chapter page. Once you upload your photos, you can rearrange them by drag and drop, and delete them with the x.
Another critical part of your group’s long term success lives with the sponsors and partners you collaborate with. Not only do sponsors and partners often offer much needed support and resources for your events, but they can also help to attract new members. Highlighting sponsors and partners on your chapter page serves as a much needed thank you for their collaboration, as well as providing your group an extra layer of validity when potential members are researching. People are generally more likely to join a group recommended to them by, or associated with a partner they already trust.
To add sponsors and partners, click on sponsors, and then click on partners. Give them a name, a click through URL, a description that your chapter visitors will see, a logo, and then click create partner.
You can rearrange partners just like photographs with drag and drop. To delete the partner, move them to inactive and use the x to remove.
Adding a sponsor is done the same way on the sponsor tab. But what is the difference between a sponsor and a partner? We define a sponsor as anyone exchanging cash for services or promotion; in other words, you’ll likely have billing contact information for them as well as some necessary invoicing. A partner is defined as anyone supplying non-cash services like venue, food, video production, or event promotion.
Additionally, on your chapter page, sponsors have larger logos than partners. Sponsors also have a more prominent placement.
Now for one of the most important elements of your chapter page. Let’s add and highlight the organizing team.
In settings, next to where we uploaded photos, we’ll find our Team settings. Here, you will find your profile. You can also search for more team members like this. You can add new team members, give them a team member title, select their role, and decide if they’ll be visible on the chapter page. Your team is assembled. You can drag and drop team members, to edit, use the pen. To remove, use the x.
Moving forward, we recommend you update this page with reasonable frequency...be sure to review the information provided at least every couple of months and make any updates needed.
